This week in social media: Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Twitter, WordPress

Here is a quick roundup of some of the latest happenings in the social media world.

Facebook

Facebook added two mobile app capabilities to help increase install rates. Developers can now use videos in their ads and take advantage of the new cost-per-action (CPA) bidding system.

The company also started testing a new feature for media organizations. Called Stories to Share, the tool is located in the Insights Dashboard and lets publishers know which stories, among those published on their sites, should also be shared on their Pages. Administrators can then decide to feature them without leaving Facebook.

This week also saw the social network strengthen its policy regarding graphic content:

First, when we review content that is reported to us, we will take a more holistic look at the context surrounding a violent image or video, and will remove content that celebrates violence.

Second, we will consider whether the person posting the content is sharing it responsibly, such as accompanying the video or image with a warning and sharing it with an age-appropriate audience.

This decision comes after Facebook was harshly criticized for reversing a temporary ban on a beheading video. The clip has officially been taken down.

Google

Gmail and Google Docs users can now use their own handwriting to input words directly with their mouse or trackpad. The new feature supports many languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Hindi and Russian. For more information, visit this page.

Google has also revamped the Hangouts sidebar of its social network to show invitations and public video parties from people a user has circled. To join a discussion, click the invite. You can also start your own. Finally, the "View all" link gives you access to all the videos parties to join.

According to several sources, including GigaOM and Billboard, YouTube would be working on a subscription music service. The service would have free and premium options and may include videos.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn’s foray into the mobile world continued this week with two major announcements:

An updated iPad app with a redesigned interface, new navigation, and added features (Influencer / Channels content and Jobs) and search capabilities.A new mobile product called LinkedIn Intro, which inserts LinkedIn profile information (photos, education, job experience, and connections) into the iPhone Mail app. The feature supports Gmail, Google Apps, Yahoo! Mail, AOL Mail, and iCloud.

Twitter

Good news for Storify users. Embedded stories are now included in the related headlines section of newsworthy Tweets. When visitors click the links, they will land on publishers' sites, not Storify.

The Vine team has added two new features to its iOS and Android apps. With Sessions, users can save a video for later completion and work on up to 10 projects at once. Time Travel allows them to edit (remove, reorganize or replace) any shot within a draft post before publishing and sharing it.

WordPress

WordPress 3.7 is now available. “Basie” comes with several new features, including automatic updates, stronger password recommendations, and better language support. Version 3.8 should be released in December.
