Get ready for more relevant content in your News Feed. Facebook announced on Tuesday that it had started tweaking its ranking algorithm to enhance the user experience on the site.
Two new features are on the menu. With Story Bumping, older posts that people have missed (and that still trigger a high level of engagement) may now show near the top of their feed the next time they log into their account:
“For Page owners, this means their most popular organic Page posts have a higher chance of being shown to more people, even if they're more than a few hours old,” says the Facebook for Business Blog. “Advertisers should note, however, that this change does not impact how paid content appears in News Feeds.”
The second feature is called “Last Actor.” Facebook will examine the last 50 actions taken by a user (e.g., likes, comments and shares) and give more weight to the people and pages with whom they have interacted the most. The next posts from these sources will then be pushed higher in the feed of that member.
Note that a new relevancy-sorted feature (“Chronological by Actor”) is being tested.
On Tuesday, Facebook also promised more transparency regarding future major News Feed changes. The company will keep users in the know and “explain the thinking behind” those changes through “News Feed FYI,” a series of blog posts published on the Facebook for Business site. You can read the first one here.
