This week in social media: Facebook, Google, Twitter

Here is a quick roundup of some of the latest happenings in the social media world.

Facebook

Facebook is testing two new buttons for Pages: Review and Follow. The first one is for places. The second one would work in a similar fashion to the Follow button found on profiles. However, followers would not add to the Liked tally.

Posts from new Facebook accounts for users ages 13 to 17 are now visible to "Friends" (instead of "Friends to Friends") by default. However, Facebook is giving these users the opportunity to turn on the "Follow" button to get subscribers and make their content available to everyone:

When teens choose ‘Public’ in the audience selector, they’ll see a reminder that the post can be seen by anyone, not just people they know, with an option to change the post’s privacy. And if they choose to continue posting publicly, they will get an additional reminder.

This week also saw the official release of the Facebook app for Windows 8. Additionally, Facebook is working towards adding new Custom Audience features. Marketers and advertisers will soon be able to deliver targeted ads to visitors of their websites or users of their mobile apps.

Google

Google announced on Friday that it had re-joined the Facebook Exchange network. Clients will soon be able to buy inventory on FBX via DoubleClick Bid Manager.

Twitter

This week, Twitter released the amended version of its IPO filing. The document reveals interesting numbers.

Twitter’s active user base is now at 230 million, from 218.3 million in the original file. Online Tweet impressions are also on the rise. There were 30 billion in Q2 and 48 billion during the last quarter.

Additionally, 76% of monthly active users access Twitter from a mobile device. They were 69 percent in Q3 2012.
