The Giants on Friday announced their tentative deal to re-sign starter Ryan Vogelsong, apparently ending their quest to complete the 2014 rotation.
Sources said the contract, which does not become official until Vogelsong passes a physical next week, is worth roughly $5 million, not much less than the $6.5 million he would have earned had the Giants exercised his option. They paid him $300,000 to buy out the option.
With incentives, Vogelsong can earn more than $6.5 million.
The Giants are not expected to pursue another free-agent starter after signing Tim Lincecum, Tim Hudson and Vogelsong. All three carry question marks following inconsistent performances or injuries in 2013.
Their focus is expected to turn toward a left fielder, with a trade more likely than a signing.
