This week in social media: Facebook, Foursquare, Google, Pinterest

Here is a quick roundup of some of the latest happenings in the social media world.

Facebook

This week, Facebook introduced its new Facebook for Business platform. The site features marketing tips, case studies, trends, and news on product updates and releases.

Facebook also reported its financial results for the second quarter of this year. The company made $1.6 billion in advertising revenue and now has a monthly active user base of 1.15 billion.

Foursquare

Foursquare launched its self-serve ad tools for small businesses on Tuesday. The service uses the same algorithm as the one that powers the Explore recommendation engine, and only charges businesses when users visit them in person or the listing on Foursquare.

Google

Google released version 1.1 of its Google+ Hangouts Android app on Tuesday.

According to a recent study conducted by Deepfield, Google accounts for almost 25 percent of all Internet traffic in the United States. This number represents an increase in 19 points compared to three years ago, and officially makes the search giant bigger than Facebook, Netflix and Twitter combined.

Pinterest

The Pinterest team announced upcoming new features on Friday. Users will soon have the ability to decide what they want to view on their home page with the Edit Your Home Feed button. They will also see suggestions based on their web-browsing and pinning activity. However, those not interested in personalized recommendations can turn the “Do Not Track” option off in their Account Settings.

More social media news

This week, Buffer added custom scheduling to its list of features.

Flipboard magazines are now available on the Web.

Infogr.am has launched a chart-creating app for Microsoft Excel users.

SlideShare has a new player optimized for infographics:

The new player automatically detects an infographic upon upload, includes it in the infographic directory and displays it for best viewing. Infographics need to be saved and uploaded in a one-page PDF format.
