SINGAPORE - It may seem that PSI readings do not tally with what you see outside, but the National Environment Agency (NEA) said today (June 22) that a standard set of methods and equipment that is based on the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency regulations is used to measure PSI.
NEA explained how its network of air monitoring stations samples and analyses key air pollutants and store real-time data, before transmitting it to a data management system, which automatically computes the PSI reading.
Ms Indrani Rajaram, project director at Pollution Control Development, said: “The way the PSI is calculated is based on guidelines provided by the US Environmental Protection Agency. In accordance with the guidelines, we have to take into consideration the 24-hour values.
“So because it is averaging over a 24-hour period, it may not correspond with what you see outside your window. Because what you see is the visibility at that point in time. This will not correspond with the average readings we are taking.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA
