NEW DELHI — A three-storey residential building collapsed early yesterday near India’s financial capital amid monsoon rains, killing at least 10 people, including five children, and injuring nine others, the police said.
The incident comes only two months after another building collapsed in the same area, killing 74 people.
The police said the 35-year-old building, located in the Mumbra area of Thane district, about 24km from Mumbai, collapsed after midnight when the residents were asleep, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. Children, including a two-month-old girl, were among those killed.
The cause of the collapse was not immediately known, but Mumbai has been hit by heavy monsoon rains.
The authorities rescued 20 people from under the debris of the building with the help of sensors, said Police Commissioner K P Raghuvanshi. Nine were hospitalised but their injuries are not life threatening, he added.
Building collapses are common in India as builders often use substandard materials and build multi-storey structures without adequate supervision. The massive demand for housing and corruption also result in unauthorised floors or illegal buildings. Agencies
